Myasia Dowdell

Statement

My name is Myasia Dowdell, I am an artist in the LAND Gallery program for adult artists with developmental disabilities in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, NY. I have been in the program since 2011.

I first started drawing at three years old and I felt that drawing taked me away from the real world and into new ones, making new friends and having adventures. In my mind, there are many favorite things I like to see, like animals and people. There are the beautiful kinds of animals that I wish to see for myself, and some that are familiar with that are amazing. There are distant memories that make me feel happy like T.V. characters and objects. There was a sense of optimism in these kinds of things that motivate and inspire me to do my art.

My most favorite objects to work on are animals, the most beautiful animals that are in this world- the mammals, the reptiles, the fish, and even insects. I feel that these are very precious creatures that need to be respected and protected in our world and I want to reach a better understanding of them. After discovering more rare beauties beyond what I’ve seen before, it makes me want to know more about them, see them through different angles, learn about their coloring and what makes them amazing. I wish that all people could take time to appreciate the beauty in our world.
